JULIANA: Hello, and welcome back to another episode of Dance Break. I'm Juliana, and I'm a firm believer that anyone can dance but that nobody can dance like you can. If you enjoy these videos and would like to see more of them, please click the Subscribe button down below to help us grow our channel. All right, my friends, let's get started.

JULIANA: On this episode, I will be joined by Ethan, another amazing member of our community, who will inspire you to rock it by yourself and get in touch with the dancer inside of you. Ethan is an active participant in our online community. He regularly attends online events such as dance parties, open mic nights, and sing-alongs.

DESCRIPTION: Various video clips of Ethan, a young African-American man, dancing during DMF online dance parties.

JULIANA: During this episode, we will be learning a fun group dance called the Cupid Shuffle. This dance has several simple moves that repeat throughout the song, giving us plenty of opportunities to practice. The best part is that the lyrics of the song actually guide us as to what comes next. So, for example, when the singer says to the right, to the right, to the right, to the right, that's our cue to either move or look to the right. Then, when the singer instructs us to the left, to the left, to the left, to the left, we know it's time to move or look to the left.

JULIANA: The next move is kick now, kick now, kick, now, kick. Some people may prefer kicking from a standing position, while others may feel more comfortable kicking while seated. And some dancers may choose to use their arms or another part of their body instead of their legs for this move. For example, I like to use my arms, so I would put one arm up towards the sky and one arm down towards the ground and then switch arms, switch arms, switch arms, switch arms. You should pick the variation that feels best to you.

JULIANA: And let's try it together. Now kick, now, kick, now, kick, now, kick. Excellent job. The final instruction that the singer is going to give us is walk it by yourself. But at Daniel's Music Foundation, we prefer to say rock it by yourself. Now, this is your chance to be creative and spontaneous and try a little improvisation. Improvisation means that you can choose any move that you want to do that feels good in that moment.

JULIANA: Now, improvisation is really exciting for some dancers, but others prefer more planned-out steps. So Ethan and I are going to be showing you some moves that we like to do, and that work well for our bodies. But you should feel free to use the moves that work best for you and your body. The first move that Ethan and I are going to do is called the swim.

JULIANA: Now, it never matters which arm you'd like to use first. So we're going to bring one arm diagonally across the body and then pull it back in. Switch to the other side, push the arm out across the body, and then pull it back in. Swim and swim, and swim, and swim. Beautiful job.

JULIANA: The second move is called seaweed arms. So I bring both arms out to the side. I raise one towards the ceiling and the other down towards the ground. And then I switch and switch and switch and switch. It's kind of like my arms are just rolling along like I'm seaweed in the ocean. Fantastic work.

JULIANA: The third move is called the Ethan in honor of our guest on dance break. So we're going to bring both arms out to the side, and then we bring them in to the midline of our body and make an X. Open them out to the side, bring them into the midline of our body, and make an X. Do the Ethan, the Ethan, the Ethan, the Ethan. Fantastic.

JULIANA: The fourth move is called raise the roof. So I'm going to bring both arms up into the air like I just don't care, and I'm going to push up. Then, switch to the other side, push up, switch back, push up, and switch to the other side. Push Up. Raise the roof. Raise, raise the roof. Then I raise the roof. Raise, raise the roof. Beautiful work.

JULIANA: Those are the choreographed moves if you would like to use them. Even though we're doing a group dance, remember that enjoying music through dance might look different for everyone. And that's OK because there's no right or wrong way to enjoy a dance break. As modern dancer and choreographer Martha Graham said, great dancers are not great because of their technique. They're great because of their passion.

JULIANA:All right, my friends, let's do some dancing. Ethan, thank you for taking the time to appear on dance break.
